Mary Ackerman

Hello, I am currently working towards my General Science Degree for High School with Middle School Certification to reach my goal of teaching science in a Middle School class. I myself was a student in the Sutton Memorial School system from Kindergarten through 12th grade and then moved onto the University of Rhode Island. Once in college I, eventually, discovered my passion for helping others learn. Since then I have pursued this by working in and outside of classes with learners of all ages. I have worked with Girl Scouts of various ages in both high school and college, as well as a Venture Crew Post (a division of Boy Scouts) which helped me discover the delights (and dangers!) of working with various age groups. My own personal interest in science, particularly the natural sciences, has lead to pursuing classes on geology, insect/human interactions, environmental economics and processes, natural science exploration,as well as plant classification, protection and anatomy. These have only helped me expand my own knowledge in science as well as how to teach science as I watched and learned from the sidelines. Not all of my interests are focused simply inside of the classroom. I like to spend my time out of doors, biking, hiking, and canoeing with friends and family. I get so much out of exploring and enjoying the world outside my back door. I stay active in all weathers by participating in the martial arts through kick boxing classes. My personal library is continually expanding to feed my need to read just about anything and everything. As you can see I like to hone my own mind and body on personal as well as professional levels and so continue to explore possibilities to do this.
